Autograph and watercolor sketch by Shurtleff for the "Autographic Illinois State Testimonial to Mrs. President Hayes." Possibly from one of the six volumes of autographs that were presented to Mrs. Rutherford B. Hayes in 1881 as a tribute to her for prohibiting the serving of alcoholic beverages at the White House during her husband's term as President. Also includes a photostatic copy of the title page to the six volumes and a reprint of an article by George Tressler Scott (Journal of the Illinois State Historical Society, spring, 1953) describing the testimonial project.
